Lend a Hand Society photographs, ca. 1860-1968.

Photographs of the Lend a Hand Society, a private Boston charitable organization founded by Unitarian minister Edward Everett Hale in 1891. Many of the photographs are portraits of Hale, taken ca. 1860-1909, including a scrapbook of photos and clippings related to him created ca. 1900-1909. There are also portraits of Rev. Christopher Rhodes Eliot, Hale's successor as president of the Society, as well as of other members; photographs of the Society's Book Mission program, including color slides taken by Book Mission executive secretary Mary C. Coburn during her trip to visit Bookmobile sites and libraries in the rural South in 1935; photographs of Lend a Hand Clubs in Massachusetts and Maine ca. 1920-1927; and images relating to the Boston Floating Hospital. The collection also contains lantern slides, some hand-colored, that depict Lend a Hand Clubs across the country, especially in the rural South, and the Society's involvement with the Grenfell Association and Near East Relief organization, all taken ca. 1915-1930. Other photographers represented in the collection include James Wallace Black of Boston, Mass. and Joan Larsen, among many others. Includes cartes de visite, cabinet cards, and snapshot photographs.
